Advantages and Disadvantages of Monitoring Internet Misuse

When reading the title of this article you are probably thinking: "There are no disadvantages of monitoring internet misuse at work." However, there are surprisingly a few disadvantages that can come out of monitoring employees internet use and we shall take a look at them now as well as some of the advantages.

Advantages:

  • Ensure Proper Internet Use
    • With monitoring internet use employers can see what their employees are doing and act accordingly.
  • Increased Security
    • Monitoring can prevent potential malware and spyware hacks that could potentially interrupt business operations.
  • Higher Employee Productivity
    • Employees that are aware that they are being monitored are less likely to spend time slacking on the job.

Disadvantages:

  • Decreased Morale
    • Constantly monitoring a loyal employee can lower self-esteem.
    • Employees that are actually using the internet for a legitimate purpose may feel as though their boss does not trust them, etc.
  • Lowered Productivity
    • Behavior studies have shown a correlation between morale and lowered productivity. An employees morale and confidence can directly impact their performance at work which ultimately will impact the organization as well.
  • Privacy Issues
    • Obviously with an employer monitoring their employee there isn't 100% privacy.
    • Employees complain about being watched, but at the same time they are using equipment owned and supplied by the employer so there is some conflict there.

  1. I think that monitoring internet usage at work is a good idea because it not only increases productivity but it also makes a company seem more put together. If employees are on facebook all day at work and people see it, they will think that the company doesn't care about what its employees are doing

  2. monitoring the internet use at work does has it advantages and disadvantages like you said, but the advantages are clearly better. the employees would be forced to complete their work, which is in fact what they are being paid to do, and this would also help protect the company from any employee from attempting to hack into the system.

  3. I think that monitoring usage becomes more important the larger a corporation becomes. I think that small companies could rely on a sense of personal responsibility. I think it's possible to give people the freedom to see a youtube video, or possibly check a competitors facebook page to see what they're offering their customers. But clearly from the data in the presentation there is a large problem with people spending a lot of work time doing non work related things on the internet, and monitoring usage may be the best response for medium to large size companies.

  4. Monitoring the internet at work has both advantages and disadvantages as stated above, but I think that a person will do what they want to do regardless if they are being monitored or not.

  5. When you are at work, you are there to work, not to be surfing the internet or reading useless articles on Yahoo!. Without strict enforcement and monitoring of the internet misuse, worker productivity will always be down. It is crucial that employers get the most out of their employees.

  6. When you are at work you have to be loyal to your employer and use your time for the company's production, because you are paid for every second of it.

  7. I have worked at a company that spent thousands of dollars restricting their employees access to websites such as facebook. When it came time to create a company facebook page, we had to use a proxy website until the security software was tweeked. I definitely believe in monitoring employee internet activity, but restricting sites can prove counterproductive.
